Magus [MAH-goos] “Wise one.” A term of unclear origins, said by some to descend from the Greek and others from a Persian tradition, it was originally applied to certain mystics of the east, but later came in Mythic Europe to mean a wizard, especially of the Order of Hermes, but more broadly to any practitioner of powerful magic. Most members of the Order of Hermes would define Magus as applying only to members of the Order; others might define it as one possessing the Gift.

The feminine form of the word is Maga [MAH-gah]; the plural, regardless of gender, is Magi [MAH-gee].
