Third Edition[]

As the new White Wolf was using Ars Magica as the background to their World of Darkness setting (q.v. the Tremere clan), some setting material was tweaked in order to facilitate both settings, e.g. the Realm of Reason. Eventually White Wolf decided to focus their attention on the World of Darkness, and Ars Magica was sold to a young Wizards of the Coast.

Fourth Edition[]

After just four published products -- one of which was a new printing of a White Wolf book, three of which were inherited unpublished White Wolf manuscripts -- Wizards of the Coast decided they were unprepared for tabletop RPG development (ironic given their later acquisition of D&D), so sold Ars Magica to regular licensed collaborator Atlas Games. Atlas immediately set about producing a new edition. The edition was almost a soft reboot, as some setting details are not consistent with earlier material, but overall fans endorsed the changes.
